Type 2 Description:
AES Crypt encrypted file
AES Crypt reads and writes files in the .aes format. File formats are easily identified using software. Packetizer does not claim exclusive rights to the .aes file format. Can be used in commercial and open source products without restrictions or costs. However, in the spirit of Open Source and to ensure that users can always read and write the .aes extension, we will ask all other AES file encryption software developers who create .aes files to use this file format for interoperability purposes.
So far there are three versions of the .aes file format, numbered from version 0.
The current file format is version 2 and is shown below. The main improvement of this version is the ability to have special “tags” that can be inserted into encrypted files. This tag is inserted by AES Crypt or other software that can read and write the .aes file format. This tag is not encrypted and can be changed after the .aes file is created without changing the contents of the encrypted file. Tags should not be considered safe information.
